Coping with the Symptoms of Menopause

Hot Flashes and Mood Swings

As if women haven’t gone through enough during their years of hormones and children, now they have the challenge of withstanding hot flashes, which can occur any time of day or night and can be quite embarrassing as often our upper lip gets beads of perspiration, and if not that just very uncomfortable.  They are the biggest complaint of women in menopause.

Hot Flash! Hot Flash!

As many as 85% of all women endure the hot flashes, which then turn into chills as you’re covered in sweat and you wish your bedroom was at 90 degrees.  These hot flashes can dwindle and eventually stop once the body gets used to lowered estrogen levels.  Or you can take HRT or ERT and they will stop right away.

One thing to do when hot flashes are hitting you is eat soy products such as tofu, soy milk, and tempura.  Just go to a good Japanese restaurant and order all of your favorite soy dishes as a gift to yourself.

Caffeine is a stimulant, which gets your heart to beat faster, raises your blood pressure and adds to your hot flashes.  Try herbal tea until your body balances out.

Yoga again will help you.  Breathe simply and deeply and relax all of the muscles that you can and you will become more stable and less prone to radical actions and reactions.

Do the obvious – put a cool compress to your forehead, take a cool bath and wear very loose clothing.  You know those funny little fans in some little catalogs or dollar stores?  Pick one up and put it near your desk or in your car and it will help a great deal.

Swing High, Swing Low

Yep, up and down and down and up with out-of-proportion irritability and you have a symptom of menopause, mood swings.  Hormones are the culprit again.  They will pass and with a little help you will get some relief.  Expect people to run for the hills when you’re dealing with this symptom.  Exercise again, it is the miracle cure of every single thing you have.  Add calcium and magnesium to your diet, listen to a guided meditation tape before you go to bed and you will sleep like a baby.
