ParentsElite Movie Club – Current Movies that are Appropriate for Preteen Viewers
In today’s society, the “R” movies pop up more often than the PG13’s and the PG’s. The following are movies that are out in theaters that have been reviewed to be appropriate for preteens ages 9+. Each movie has been broken down into categories that are important to parents such as: message, violence, sex, language.
1. Amelia: This movie is a biopic about the life of Amelia Earhart. (Age 11+)
Message: teaches young women to stand up to their fears and not to back down.
Violence: There is violence in the air when the plane is jostled around, and plane crash scenes.
Sex: There are scenes of passionate kissing, and an affair between a married women and another man.
Language: Such words as “hell” and “damn” are used in this movie.
2. Where the Wild Things Are: This is a movie about Max’s family relationships, making friends, and growing up. (Age 9+)
Message: Parents beware the messages in this movie are complex. They include helping friends accomplish tasks, and the importance of family and the bond between a mother and her child.
Violence: A Wild Thing named Carol acts out smashing things, and threatening to eat Max.
Sex: It is suggested that Max’s mother has a boyfriend and they kiss briefly.
Language: Mild use of language such as “hell” and “God” used as an exclamation
3. Free Style: A motocross movie about a boy who is hard working thing to help provide for his family (age 11+)
Message: This movie is about helping family and reaching for your dreams.
Violence: There is a brief fight between two friends.
Sex: There are scenes of close dancing and couples kissing
Language: This movie is a clean movie.
4. More Than a Game: This is a movie about NBA players from Akron, OH. It is a documentary about their friendship and what they achieved. (Age 10+)
Message: The message of this movie is that friendship and teamwork go a long way. There are also trials and tribulations of growing up portrayed in this movie such as growth spurts, and scheduling conflicts on game night.
Violence: There is minor fooling around and horse play in this movie.
Sex: There is the mention of beautiful girls that are fans but nothing explicit is shown.
Language: There is small usage of “hell” and the “N” word is said in the back ground and is barely audible.
These four movies are possibilities for preteens that are out in the box office now. With movies being geared more toward the adult scene it is nice to see a few movies that are appropriate for younger viewers.
