When you are nursing your baby, you need not make any major adjustments in your diet. All you need to do is take into consideration a few more things. You might know it already that breast milk provides all the sufficient nutrition to your baby. So, that doest mean that you can observe any carelessness in your diet. You will definitely need that physical strength to take care of your baby, nurse him, feed him and look after him.

So, just the thought of taking care of your baby should motivate you to follow the same diet that you followed when you were pregnancy. You should take lots of iron, protein and calcium in your diet through green vegetables, fruits and cereals. But you do not need to eat for two, you just need to have meals that can nourish your body and prepare it for the activities you perform daily, including taking care of your baby.

It is natural for you to try to lose weight after the delivery, but you need to take it very slowly and easy.  However, losing a lot too quickly can harm your baby because fat stored in the body releases toxins into the main bloodstream. As a result, the quantity of these contaminants increases in your milk. So, if you’re losing a bit more than 2 pounds every week after the first seven weeks, you should take more calories. Breastfeeding helps in exhausting the fat that got deposited in the body during the nine months of pregnancy in order to prepare you for the lactation process. So, some new mothers find that their weight appears to vanish while they’re nursing their babies.

However, you should consider at least a period of around ten months to return to your pre-pregnancy size. Limiting your diet during the first weeks of lactation reduces your milk supply.

Here are some tips for you:

  • Control the amount and the type of fish you consume. Avoid tuna steak (either fresh or frozen), orange roughy, Spanish mackerel, marlin, and grouper because they contain very high levels of mercury which can be harmful for the baby.
  • Stay hydrated…drink plenty of water.
  • Ask your doctor for an iron supplement. It is required in case the amount of iron is less in your body.
  • Watch what you eat because your baby will get affected if you eat anything that causes gas or such problems.

Remember that nothing can take the place of a proper balanced diet, so make sure you take one and keep yourself and your baby healthy.
