Five Reasons Why You Should Read to Your Children
You already know how reading aloud can generally benefit you child. Now, let’s see what’s the (in)direct benefit for you.
1. Bonding – child loves the color of your voice. She/he enjoys when you’re close to her/him, enjoys cuddling, hugs and kisses. Make this ‘your time’. Just you and your kid. This is an excellent opportunity for one-on-one communication, and it gives your child the attention he craves. Your child will be grateful for this. She/he will respect you and love you – you will be his/her No.1 friend.
2. Become a role model – you know how important it is to be your child’s role model? Of course you do, you’re a smart parent. This is a great way to maintain your status. As your child grows up, she/he understands the importance of reading. If your child sees/hears you reading, she/he will perceive you as an intelligent, modern, educated parent. That’s a lot of bragging material for them.
3. Vocabulary and speech development – by reading to your child, you help her/his learn new words, pronounce them and generally develop their conversational abilities. You probably know how tedious sometimes it is when your child throws a never ending chain of questions, like ‘what does cunning mean…what does modern mean…what’s an SUV…’’. Sometimes it feels like it’s never going to end. But this is a good thing. Your child shows his inquisitive nature and sheer desire to learn new things. The problem is, you simply don’t have time for these. You’re a modern parent. You’re a busy parent. You’re often under a lot of pressure, free time is something you really don’t have that much. But you always have 20 minutes per day for reading aloud. And this can help your child to learn how to discover new things on her own. This will leave you more time for other things, because you won’t have to constantly answer her questions or nag about how she doesn’t read enough. All this will prepare your child very well for school. You constantly hear how parent must constantly control their children, are they doing their homework, how they have to motivate them to learn, problems with grades. Do you think your child will have…
4. Trouble with learning at school? No way. – by the time she/he hits 1st grade, she will be way ahead of great majority of kids in her/his class. Your child will be inquisitive, ask a lot of questions in class, learn on her/his own, do her homework on her own. And you? Since you don’t have to do all of this with you child…Well there’s a ton of free time for you and your own activities.
5. Long-term benefits – As your child gets older, he/she will read on his/her own, building on the interest and experience of being read to for years. This sets off a life-long interest/aptitude in reading. It will be invaluable later in his life. Your child will be inquisitive, wise, well spoken, sociable and resourceful. Results? Today, majority of young people expect everything to be handed to them. And you can’t blame them. Their parents often act like their servants. But you know better. You’re not your child’s servant, you’re his/her best friend and a role model.
