Flu Shots don’t Have to be Painful
Injection shots are feared by many, so it’s no surprise children do anything to escape from flu shots – screaming, crying, making a scene. However, there are some techniques that can make this a less stressful experience – a welcome help in this period of year.
Dr. Lonnie Zeltzer, director of the Pediatric Pain Program at Mattel Children’s Hospital of the University of California, Los Angeles says that childhood vaccine, blood work or flu shot doesn’t have to be a nightmare for children. Here are few tips from expers:
- Babies and younger children can be distracted by soap bubbles. Very small children are easily entertained by soap bubbles, so a good idea would be to hold a bubble making wand in front of your child’s mouth – perfect way to blow away the hurt.
- Relaxation excercises tecniques. Ask your children to use their imagination to create a happy place in their mind – a fun park, candy shop etc. Also, try to explain them a breathing techniques – tell them to breath out slowly like it is about blowing a huge balloon.
- Numbing cream or patch. Apply it to the sport where the shot will go – usually the arm or the thigh. Just make sure to ask your doctor for prescription first.
