Giving Your Baby a Bath
A bath can be a very soothing and relaxing experience for your baby. However, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind while giving him a bath.
When your baby is just a few weeks old, a sponge bath is the best option. Simply wipe your baby’s hands and face with a sponge or a soft cloth dipped in lukewarm water every time you feel that he needs a bath. Also, you should clean his genital areas properly after every diaper change.
The tub baths come into the picture after your baby’s umbilical cord stump has fallen off and the related area has healed. You should use the kitchen sink or small bath tubs that are especially designed for babies (instead of the standard tubs) when you are just starting to give your baby his first few real baths. It may be difficult to maintain a grip on a wet and sloppy little creature, but you need to be calm and the confidence will make its way inside you gradually.
Some parents give their babies a bath everyday just because they feel that they should do so.
However, your baby doesn’t really require more than two-to-three baths per week until he is really messing up with his food or formula.
Some babies tend to prefer warm water than cold because it makes them more comfortable. You may also face crying babies during a bath, so taking them in and out of the tub for some time can prove to be a good idea.
Here are some of the things you need to keep in mind wile giving your baby a bath:
- Do not leave your baby alone and unsupervised during a bath whatever may be the situation. If you really have to go, wrap a towel around him and carry him with you.
- Never lower your baby into the tub if the water is still running. If the water becomes too deep, there might be a drowning hazard for your baby.
- Make sure that the water is not very hot or else, your baby can get serious burns.
- Make sure all the things you need during his bath (such as towels, bath supplies and his clothes) are already with you before you start to bathe him. Doing so will keep you from running for these things as and when you require them.
Always stay with him when you are doing something with him that is entirely new or needs time to adjust to. Relax and take it easy with him.
