Good things about video games

There is an extensive discussion about the negative effects of video games: about their influence on kids  inducting them to violence, to stall their studies and negative effects on their health such as overweight, sight problems, etc.

These messages can scare the parents too much and make them forget about some good points about video games. We will now assume that kids are not abusing of video games , they are just playing the fair amount of time and perceive the activity as entrainment, meaning that they put their tasks -or homework- priority over this.

Languages and vocabulary

It is surprising how many kids have learned so much about English when playing video games. They see the language difference as something fun and that gets ever more fun when they figure out something new. This applies to any language.  Plenty of games use sophisticated and rich vocabulary, which  children could adopt quick, specially when they are motivated about the “coolness” of it.  Have you heard how they speak video games based on ‘’The Lord Of the Rings” or “Star Wars” ?

Technology

kids video gamesIt seems like our kids are better than us at computers and electronics.  They shouldn’t get behind other kids at school.  Regarding technology, video games have a tradition of innovation attached to them. Have you played Nintendo’s Wii ?  If kids embrace technology in its most innovative expressions, they are surely going to be better prepared for the near future.

Information and creativeness

It is the information era after all.  The video games are often offering many on-line versions and options. They go from chat rooms, sharing and collaboration to multi player interaction. The on-line access is granting them with a way to know what is going on in the world, they can socialize (in a healthy way) over the Internet. Playing video games has a lot of interaction and a lot of topics. Games go from fantasy to sports, from adventure type to strategy. Children have enough room to turn on their creative braincells when exposed this fantastic world.

Concluding, sometimes the video games can have negative effects but this is mostly due to abuse.  If kids play the right amount they ill meet their entertainment needs as minimum, and hopefully work out technology, language, vocabulary and Information skills. Happy gaming for them.
