Bringing a baby into the world is one of the most exciting times in a parent’s life.  The responsibility for the safety and health of a human being can be overwhelming, especially if the baby is the parent’s first child.  It doesn’t need to be overwhelming.  With a little education, parents can relax and be assured that their baby will be kept safe and healthy.

Health and Safety Tip #1 – Protect babies while they are sleeping.  There are many things that parents can do to keep their infant safe when they are in their cribs.  Parents should put infants to sleep in pajamas that are comfortable for the temperature of the home, but they should not ever put a blanket in the crib with an infant.  Additionally, infants should never be put to sleep with a pillow in the crib.  While rare, injuries can occur because of crib railings in old cribs.  Parents should make sure that any crib they place their infant in has the regulation distance between the rails.  Finally, infants should never be put to sleep on a couch or chair where they could roll off onto the floor.

Health and Safety Tip #2 – Protect babies while they are awake.  Even though infants are basically not mobile, they can roll when parents least expect it.  Infants should never be left unattended.  Many parents use infant seats to carry babies, but babies should never be placed in an infant carrier with out the buckles being securely fastened.  Parents should also make sure that they know how to properly secure the car seat so that their baby is safe when riding in the car.  Infants are particularly susceptible to germs.  Parents should take extra precautions when they take their infants out in public to shield them as much as possible from germs.  Suggestions include wiping down surfaces that a baby may touch, frequent hand washing with soap and water, and avoidance of people will illnesses.

Health and Safety Tip #3 – Protect babies when they are eating.  An infant’s basic job in the early months of life is to grow.  Because babies grow faster during those first few months than they do during any other time in their lives, nutrition is of the utmost importance.  Parents should research feeding options and amounts to ensure that their baby is receiving the correct nutrition.

Infants can be so much fun, but they can be a lot of work as well.  Keeping them safe and healthy during their early months of life is a great responsibility.  Safety when infants are awake and sleeping is essential, as is making sure that they are receiving the appropriate nutrition.  Considering these health and safety tips can give parents a good start toward a healthy future for their child.
