Health Hazard for Parents: Abusing Alcohol or Drugs

Many, many people take a little drink or two each evening.  It seems like nothing, really.  But it is not nothing.  It is a habit that negatively affects your liver, stomach, esophagus, bladder, lungs and heart.  Is that enough or shall we go down the road where we think we look sober and everyone else is avoiding us or laughing at us.  Drinking will kill neurons in your brain and will weaken your immune system.

The above is true and then multiply the issues when you’re hooked on getting high in its many forms – weed, coke, ecstasy, or prescription drugs.  It’s murdering you.  And it’s affecting your family life, if you still have a family.

OK, to start you must break the habit of your daily routine.  If you like to get high in the morning, get up and drink a big glass of orange juice and have some cereal with berries.  If you have a drink the minute you leave work, go to a non-drinking friend’s house and have flavored water.  If you would rather get right home so you can relax, instead of fixing a drink or popping a pill just go and take a hot bath with bubbles and light candles and lie there and concentrate on every inch of your body and how it feels.  In fact, you could do your own guided meditation and take yourself wherever else you would like to be.

AA is successful for lots of folks as well as Narcotics Anonymous.  They are interchangeable so you needn’t go to both unless you like seeing new friends.  Just like with cigarettes, tell people that you are quitting drinking and getting high.  Of course, you’ll get that same irritated response from your drinking pals, but if you were sober you wouldn’t want to be with many of them anyway.  They look so ridiculous.

It is so unfortunate that we start these habits after years without any of them.  Perhaps we copy our families, sometimes we just have proclivities to drink or get high.  We’re stressed, obviously, but there are other things we can do.  There is always the gym.  There are sober friends to play with.  Please try to stay away from your old crowd.  They will miss you and make you feel inferior.  What you are doing is actually a total act of love to yourself and your family that you will never regret.
