You may not be aware that the baby’s teeth start to grow from right inside the womb. It takes a lot of time before you see any signs of teeth growth in the gums. The process starts inside the womb as soft tooth buds and in most of the cases at the age of six months teeth break through the gums. Some babies tend to have teething even at the age of four months and for some the process takes a little longer.
The center bottom two are generally the first teeth that emerge out of the gums followed by the center top two and so on till the age of two years. As a rule of thumb every six months the child cuts four teeth. Most of the children have around twenty teeth by the age of three.
This growth of teeth can be a very uneasy process for the baby and you as a parent should keep a close watch on the progress of teething. You may also want to help the baby in the teething process by getting some soft chewable teething toys. These toys help the teething easier for the babies. While the baby may suffer fever during teething you should also be cautious about other bacterial and viral causes of baby fever.
You should inculcate the habit of teeth hygiene in your babies from the very early age. It is seen that more than twenty percent of babies suffer tooth decay even before the age of three. Therefore, it is extremely important that baby clean their regularly from the very first time they start to appear. It is also advisable that after every feeding the gums are cleaned with a wet piece of cloth. And once the teeth appear they should be at least cleaned twice a day preferably in the mornings and evenings. Some doctors also suggest the cleaning of tongue with teeth. Once the baby is finished with her evening brushing she should be let to drink any milk or beverage except water. If the baby is still breastfeeding make sure you wipe the gums and teeth before letting her back to the crib.
Some kids my also suffer deficiency of fluorides. If you live in a place where the water supply is not fluoridated, or your baby is only breastfed, or she takes only bottled water then you can ask your dentist of pediatrician for fluoride supplements.
The babies should learn that they should take good care of their teeth and even after all the care you should visit the dentist at least two times a year.
