Keeping Eyes on Your Child’s Skill Development in Preschool Years
Preschool years play a dominant and crucial role in the growth of a child. It is very essential for parents too that are very much aware of what milestones much their child achieve so as to ensure the child’s proper development. If the parents are conscious what all child must be able to do at a particular age level, they will easily make out where the child is lacking and what all effective measures need to be taken. The skills that are developed in the preschool years play a significant and imperative role when your child goes to the school and starts interacting with others.
As it is said that the parents are the best judge as well as the best guide for their children, they can make out in these preschool years what activities their child interested in. An important fact that should be kept in mind is that, all the milestones mentioned here are based on average expectations. Any child may also be above average or may perform a little low too. But this is not the concern; you must pay heed to how much skills have been started developing and what all need to be done!
Skill development for preschoolers can be determined as per the age milestones. Parents should keep eyes on the following:
Skill development at 2 years
- You will feel that you child’s growth pace has decreased a bit as compared to what the child was showing in the first eighteen months span.
- Your child should have started speaking fifty words at least.
- The child must also start using 2-2 words sentences.
- The child shows a mixed set of emotions, sometimes excited, scared, confused, and also may have started showing temper tantrums.
- Also the child can run and go up and down the staircases.
Skill development at 3 years
- By the age of 3 years you will see that your child had started looking lean and longer.
- Your child has started using four to five words sentences and also knows the name, age and a few facts.
- Also the child enjoys simple riddles, simple games and puzzles,.
- You will see your child jumping, running, screwing and unscrewing lids, kicking a ball and enjoying in such activities.
- He or she is interested in toilet training.
Skill development till age 4:
- You shall see that the child now identifies the basic set of colors, and matches shapes.
- The child lives in his/her own world and amaze the parents by their thoughts.
- The child draws squares circles and has started speaking 5-6 words sentences, or you may also get surprised by seeing you loved child singing a cute song!
- You will also see that he or she can ride a tricycle, climbing the staircases without taking help of anything.
Skill development till the age of 5:
- Your child has started acting independently and has started understanding basic rules made by you.
- Converses well and you will see he/she has started using future tenses too.
- Knows most of the letters, numbers till ten, address, time and phone numbers too.
- At this age you the parents also need to show their creativity, and start some preschool activities.
- You must also pay special heed for emotional development of your child. Encourage motor skill development too. Engage the child in such activities such as paper cutting, shapes recognizing etc. Always ensure safety.
Some activities for preschool learning that you can follow are:
- You may give some old set of books or magazines which has a large number of images or pictures in it. Give you child and then play a fun game in which either you may ask your child to recognize colors, shapes, expressions, and also tell them to cut the boundaries of the recognized faces and shapes.
- Also you may plan for some indoor living room picnic. This will make your child happy. Take a tablecloth and spread it on your living room floor. Use some paper plates. Wear picnic type outfits and enjoy with your child.
- You can also make your child a little carpenter by giving him/her a toy hammer, golf tees and Styrofoam. You will see your child enjoying and showing his /her creativity in carpentering.
