Letting Your Toddler Explore His Creative Side
Even young toddlers enjoy creating wonderful pieces of art. They take pride in the work they produce and you should help them in their artist journey by buying them some supplies.
During the ‘terrible’ two years, your child will take interest in scribbling things on paper with pencil and drawing on the sidewalk with chalk. Towards the end of the second year she should be ready to move on to smaller paper crayons.
At one, your child will most likely be interested in finger painting. It is a great experience because your child will learn what the paint feels like and what happens when they move their finger on the paper. Later in the year, try moving onto thick paintbrushes.
Materials like playdough and clay offer great experiences for your child. They let your child feel the materials and let their imaginations flow. The possibilities are endless of what your child can create from some clay.
Since your child is going to be wanting to paint everything in sight, you need to setup boundaries for your youngster. If you have an extra room in the house that isn’t in use, consider it making it your child’s painting room. Put plastic up on the walls and let your toddler go to town painting paper, cardboard or even the plastic. If this isn’t an option, your driveway always serves as a great place for your child to exhibit her artistic talent. Chalk will always be washed off by rain and it can turn your driveway into something exciting instead of ugly concrete.
Music also plays a vital part in your child’s development. By the time your kid is one, he/she should be able to recognize some sounds. By the age of 3, she should be learning to memorize some easy songs. (Merry had a little lamb) etc. Be sure to sing lullabies to your child during bed time and silly songs during playtime.
Although your child might sit back and let you do all the singing, encourage her to sing along with you. Not only will it increase her use of vocabulary, it will help her with her speech patterns. Developing speech skills is one of the most important things to learn during childhood.
To enhance your child’s creativity, let them bang on bowls and spoons to create their own “music.” If you find this annoying, just know that they are developing crucial skills that will help them over their lifetime.
