Managing Premature Births

Over the last few decades it is observed that there is a substantial increase in the number of premature and preterm babies. The primary reason according to the doctors is due to the lifestyle changes in life, emergency situations and due to the advances in medical technology. However, whenever a baby takes birth before the completion of pregnancy period there is an element of risk associated to both the baby and the child.

If you think that you also have a risk of a preterm baby then you should read ahead to know about the warning signs and risks associated with it as well as what should you do to handle the situation?

Preterm baby warning signs and symptoms

l  Leakage of blood or fluid from the vagina (You should immediately get in touch with your healthcare provider if you run into this situation)

l  You feel cramps like you feel during your periods

l  Continuous back ache

l  Pressure in the pelvic area as if the baby is trying to come out

l  Acute cramps in the Abdomen

l  Frequent contractions in the uterus

You may be at a risk of a preterm birth due to many reasons like

l  When you have multiple babies in your womb

l  You are either too young (below 18) or too old (over 35) for getting pregnant

l  If you have already given a preterm birth

l  Suffering from placental or Uterine disorders

l  When you are either overweight or underweight

l  Not able to gain enough weight during pregnancy

l  If you are addicted to smoking, alcohol or drugs

l  Undergone abortions

l  The interval between the pregnancies is very short

l  Health disorders like diabetes, high blood pressure or hypertension

l  Even gum related problems can contribute to a preterm birth

How should you manage a preterm birth?

If you feel that you show any of the signs of a preterm delivery as mentioned above you should follow these steps:

  1. Lie on the floor for around 1 hour on your left side
  2. Take some fluids such as water or juice whatever is convenient
  3. If the symptoms vanish within an hour, calm down and do not work yourself out for the rest of the day. And you should discontinue what you were doing when the symptoms started appearing.
  4. After following the steps above if the symptoms persists get in touch with your health care provider or directly visit the hospital or a doctor
  5. If the symptoms repeat, in that case also you should visit the hospital
