Menstrual Problems – Menstrual Cramps and Excessive Bleeding
Menstrual Cramps (Dysmenorrhea)
Do you get cramps? Then, get into the pool and start swimming. The endorphins that you’ll get from the exercise will relieve you a great deal.
Yes, here it comes again. . .hormones. They are the culprits in menstrual cramping. They are overproducing prostaglandins. The covering of the uterus, endometrium helps the uterus contract, which is important when you are flowing. The cramping comes up when the body releases too much estrogen into the blood. It increases fluid retention.
About half of the world’s women experience this menstrual cramping. Misery loves company. The prescription for cramping is the same as for PMS: less salt, exercise, good sleep, lots of water, a calcium rich diet, low fat yogurt and if you don’t like that you can take a calcium-magnesium supplement. For minor cramping, use Midol. Stretchy clothes and a heating pad wouldn’t hurt either. If these cramps interfere with your life, see your doctor for further pain management.
Excessive Bleeding (Menorrhagia)
Women all have different experiences with pain and bleeding and we have no scale by which to measure one against another but there is a guide that says if you need to change your tampon or napkin once or twice an hour, you have menorrhagia. Why? Maybe over exercising or dieting, benign cysts in the uterus called fibroids, a bladder infection, dysfunctional blood clotting, perimenopause or early stages of menopause. The calm before the storm.
Cut back, yes back, on exercise.
Eat a well-rounded diet.
Ease up on work and stress.
Ask your doctor about iron supplements and anemia.
