Ovulation and symptoms that indicate fertility

Ovulation is the process in which female body releases mature ovum, or egg, from the ovary. Your pregnancy depends on the fertilization and implantation of this egg. If you are thinking of getting pregnant, you need to know the details of Ovulation and Fertility. Generally, your fertile period begins one day before you ovulate. You can predict your ovulation by the body symptoms such as:

Some Physical indications:

The body signals ovulation when you feel-

·         Abdominal twinges or cramps

·         Breast tenderness

·         Change in the position of cervix.

·         Increased discharge from vagina.

You can also make out your ovulation by analyzing:

Cervical Mucus:

You can also detect your approaching ovulation day by monitoring the vaginal secretions. Women may check that by keeping eyes on the mucus at the mouth of the vagina. The consistency and amount of the cervical mucus will vary as:

After your menstrual period, the vaginal secretions will be somewhat sticky or tacky.

When you approach your ovulation date, just before ovulation, you may have an increase in vaginal secretions. They would be slippery and wet much resembling to raw white egg’s consistency.

After the ovulation day, the vaginal discharge decreases. It becomes thicker in consistency too and is secreted less.

Some factors which may also affect the vaginal secretions are:

·         Sexual arousing

·         Sexually transmitted diseases

·         Lubricants used during sexual intercourse

·         Vaginal infections

Basal Body Temperature:

As per the ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) most of the women experience a small but detectable rise in their body temperature, after the ovulation. You can keep eyes on basal body temperature and keep on tracking the results; this will help you predicting the ovulation. Basal body temperature measurement should be the first task in the morning. The accuracy of temperature may be affected by conditions such as exertion, fever, tiredness, stress, restless sleep.

Basal body temperature can be measured with the help of Basal Body Thermometer which is an easy to read, large scale thermometer that has a scale ranging between 96 to 100 degrees. A general study indicated that before ovulation the basal body temperature is between 96-98 degrees and after ovulation it registers to be 97-99 degrees. The thumb rule is that, you have ovulated when your body temperature rises 0.2 degrees more than any measured temperature from the past six days, and it remains raised for at least three consecutive days. Measure it before you step out of your bed, eat, talk, etc.
