Pregnancy and Weight Gain

If your wife is pregnant, love her but do not pamper her by giving any thing which she likes to eat! A healthy diet is a must for a healthy pregnancy. If your wife loves to eat French fries do not let her eat only that, give her nutritious food items which will help her baby develop too. Eating without thinking during pregnancy can be very risky and can cause pregnancy complications.

Gaining proper amount of weight during pregnancy is very essential. If the women gains very less, have a risk of giving birth to low weight babies (which is less than 5.5 pounds). And if the women gain too much weight are at a risk of delivering early baby or may also have a large baby. A lady with larger weight may also have problems like high blood pressure, diabetes etc.

In an average case, the body of a woman needs around 300 additional calories per day when she is pregnant. Though this figure may vary depending upon what your weight was before you got pregnant. A basic set of guidelines for weight gain during pregnancy are:
Women with normal weight before pregnancy:

She must gain 25-35 pounds in the span of 9 months. On an average, in the first trimester she must gain around 1 to 4 ½ pounds and later about 1 pound in each week.

Women who are underweight before pregnancy:

She should gain slight more as she is more likely to have a small baby. Doctors recommend that 28-40 pound gain is needed for delivering a baby with normal weight. On an average, in the first trimester she must gain around 1 to 4 ½ pounds and later about more than 1 pound in each week.

Women who are overweight before pregnancy:

She should have a weight gain of just 15-25 pounds in the 9 months span. On an average, in the first trimester she must gain around 1 to 4 ½ pounds and later about more than half a pound in each week. She must never try to loose her weight during pregnancy as it can cause harmful effects.

Women who were obese before pregnancy:

She must gain about 11-20 pounds in the nine months span. On an average, in the first trimester she must gain around 1 to 4 ½ pounds and later about less than half a pound in each week.
