Reading is an excellent way to spend quality time; It also introduces them to words, language and concentration skills early in life. Starting to introduce books and language skills at Toddler age will be extremely beneficial to them later in life. Not only will they look forward to reading activities when they start school and learn valuable language skills; they will learn that reading is another alternative activity of enjoyment.
When reading to your toddler it is important to find books that are interesting and keep their attention. Picking the right book for your child is very important. It is all about their personality and the time of day you are reading to them. There are different genres of books that can be used to assist you with teaching your toddler skills; improving their imagination and helping them deal with difficult emotions.
Audio books are also a good alternative if you find your time limited or when traveling in the car.
Dr Seuss has fun rhyming books; although they seem silly they are actually quite good at keeping your Toddlers attention. The repetition of words and tongue twister phrases make reading these books fun for both Toddler and parents. The repetitious crazy phrases are easy for your toddler to learn and once you have read them a few times they will be able to join in. The words that are used are varied but many of them are simple three letter words that are the first words children learn in school. They are written in colorful large letters that stand out; so when pointing to the words while reading it imprints in their little brains. Research shows that this type of imprinting will assist your toddler with word recognition when they reach school age.
Finding books that teach daily life skills are very helpful when teaching Toddlers to become more independent; books regarding toilet training; cleaning your room; going to school; wearing a seat belt in the car and much more. Visits to your local children’s library will have an array of books to suit your needs. Some states also offer a mobile library service; no matter what the subject the library will have the book for you; they can also recommend the latest books that are recommended for children.
Bed time stories are great for the imagination, be careful that they are not scary and make it hard for them to sleep. Stories with a happy ending and involve feelings of safety and love are best. Some classic fairy tales have quite disturbing story lines so consider these stories before telling them. I am not trying to suggest that these stories are not appropriate; just be sure to let them know that is a fairy tale and does not represent real life at all.
