After you have brought your baby home, you have to prepare yourself to be responsive to all the needs of your baby. Babies are very delicate at this stage and you need to take utmost care of them and give them all the care and attention they seek from you. Never expect anything from your baby according to your observation of other babies. Each one has some unique traits and it is challenging to recognize what your baby needs and how you should make a start.
If you are a new parent then you must be at least aware of what is usually observed but at the same time you should expect the unexpected. Newborns usually sleep for around 16 ½ hours in a day. They will need approximately 2 to 3 ounces of formula within every 3-4 hours. A minimum of two bowel movements occur in a day and you must be prepared to change the nappies or diapers frequently. Most of the times, babies can be calmed down by holding them close, rocking in rhythmic motion, or taking Most babies can be soothed by being held close, rocking rhythmic motion, or going for a walk while holding them in your lap. Carry a pacifier with you, sometimes it is the best way to calm down a crying baby, because it gives something to suck on in between feeds. You will quickly learn how to respond to your baby’s needs in different situation
Feeding the baby is not only associated with her physical needs but emotional needs as well. The time that you spend with your baby while feeding her offers you an opportunity to bond with the baby and draw some emotional closeness with the child. If you do not breastfeed your baby your baby will need 2 to 3 ounces of formula in every 3 -4 hours. As the baby grows this requirement will increase to 4 ounces with similar time gaps. Ask your pediatrician to address the requirements for special formula if needed.
As you carefully study your baby you will observe some definite patterns in her behavior. You establish your first means of communication when you respond to the cries of the baby. Gradually you will learn that a cry for hunger is different from a cry to let you know that the baby is feeling sleepy.
The baby can cry for any reason ranging from hunger to fatigue and even boredom. So to see a smile on your baby’s face keep entertaining her and avoid monotony. The baby will slowly learn to trust you, and you will have to learn to trust your natural instincts.
