Parents often wonder what kind of literature most apropriate fo their children. A book for a two year old kid won’t be of much interest for a 1st grader. Here are some tips that can help you pick the best book (or generaly an kind of text) for your child.

During a first couple of months, your baby simply likes to hear your voice. Which means, you can read almoust anything. Generally, choose books with simple, repetitive text  and clear images. Books with rhyming text or a sing-song are also great. But this is not a rule, because at this point of your child’s life…

Any text is just fine. Remember, it’s how you read it. So, take daily newspaper, fashion magazine, flyers…almoust anything will do. It doesn’t have to be a children book. The most important thing is that your child listens to your voice. Make a special connection with your child.

Once your baby becomes more interested in looking at things, pick books with simple illustrations. And before you know it, your baby will begin to grab vinyl or cloth books with bright colours, shapes and faces. He/she will react to what’s inside of books. This is a good time to add books with pictures of babies or familiar objects.

Books with various textures and mirrors are also great for early age. Also choose fold-out books that can popup, or books with some kind of open-up-suprise. Your kid will love them.

When your baby  begins to do things like eating finger foods or sitting in the bathtub, throw in some simple stories about daily routines like brushing teeth, lunch time, bedtime etc. Speaking of tubs and water, vinyl and cloth books can go everywhere.

A great way you can incite a reader in your child is to have books around the house. Well, it doesn’t have to be a book, almoust any literature will do. Magazines, newspaper etc. When your baby becomes a crawler, make sure some books are included in a basket of toys. That way, he/she will see a book as a toy and reading as something fun and enjoyable.

When your childs starts to talk, choose books with repetitive text. This invites children to repeat simple words and phrases.

And don’t forget your local library – they are a great source for free children books. And while you’re there, pick a book for yourself. You like to read a good book? Great, show that to your child. Be a role model.
