Being pregnant and working can be a bit tough. But if you are healthy and are taking proper care of yourself, you can manage both your pregnancy and your job. You can even work until the around the day you deliver. The only thing you must pay attention to should be taking everything easy and finding some time to rest. Also, if is it possible for you to take a maternity leave before a week or two of the due date, go for it because it gives you time to prepare yourself, rest better and a chance to spend some time with yourself (it might be at least a while after the delivery until you get that).

What if the job is strenuous?

Strenuous jobs include heavy lifting, standing for long periods, high number of working hours and other such constraints. If your job is too strenuous or physically taxing, it can have a serious impact on your baby, which can include preterm birth, low birth weight and increasing blood pressure during pregnancy.

To avoid such complications, you could try to switch your work with a colleague of yours for a desk job while he/she can do your job. Or else you could talk to your boss about reducing the hours or the intensity of work. And you must take breaks as often as you can. Take days off from the job from time to time to give yourself the extra rest needed.

If you work around toxic substances, you need a quick job reassessment coz toxic substances can even cause miscarriages in serious cases.

Should I stop working?

You should stop working if you experience any of the following signs:

  • High blood pressure
  • Cervical inefficiency or a previous miscarriage
  • Your baby isn’t growing properly
  • Too much stress

How can I be comfortable at work?

You can be quite close to feeling your usual self at work if you pay attention to some of these things:

  • Take breaks
  • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes
  • Drink lots of water
  • Find time to have small meals and nutrition snacks.
  • Rest for sometime
  • Don’t stress yourself unnecessarily by overworking.
  • If your colleagues offer help, accept it.

What if my boss isn’t supportive?

If your boss isn’t supportive, you can ask him for a less demanding job and you can’t be refused. This is because employers have to follow the Pregnancy Discrimination Act which states that pregnant women should be treated with discretion. Still, if your boss makes it harder for you, do a quick job reassessment.

It is entirely your decision whether to work or not, but it is advised that you should quit a job that is demanding a lot out of you, even in such a delicate condition.
